How many fat people have you met at the gym? No, I'm not talking about working out, I'm talking about university. How many fat teachers have you had? What are your references of fat, wise and successful women? And how many of these write and transform their own experiences into a practical experience in order to empower their peers?
Malu Jimenez Jimenez does it all. With the thesis “Fight like a fat woman: gordophobia, resistance and activism” , she uses autoethnography to talk about culture, the fat body and feminism, transforming not only her own journey, but that of many people, into something smoother.
In a parallel that challenges even feminist books, such as those by Amanda Lovelace, Malu Jimenez provokes those who read her to reflect on the non-existence of fairy tales in the life of the fat woman, without a prince to save her.
Fundamental themes such as the stigmatization of the fat body, lack of accessibility, concern with health, with the famous “every fat woman is sick”, consumption of supervised food, clothes that do not fit, abusive relationships, beauty versus ugliness, food market, diets, plus size, pornography, among other huge issues that guide the life of a fat woman.
With great dexterity when it comes to writing a thesis, Malu manages to bring the academy closer to the streets and shorten distances by writing in the first person, by citing theories amid so many testimonies heard throughout life, by creating bridges and no longer walls. and, it goes further, transforming a thesis into something that can be not only read, but also worn, dialoguing and entering different environments, with the T-shirt FIGHT LIKE A FAT , which is launched now, with remodeling of all sizes by Puta Peita .
The thesis, published below, is, therefore, a text that is free of rigid academic standards, but that communicates exactly what it proposed: to talk about the lives of fat women, about activism and about inclusion.
And the goal is achieved. Reading the thesis is like receiving a hug, it's like looking in the mirror and recognizing yourself, it's like leaving the lonely limbo that fatphobia imprisons us and feeling understood.
However, it is not just a text for fat women. On the contrary, I dare say that it is a text for thin people - men and women - and that it is not necessary, it is obligatory. If we are thinking of a universe that is deconstructed, the time to start thinking about intersectionalities is now and a good way is to stop multiplying fatphobia.
Good reading! Read Malu Jimenez ’s thesis “Fight like a fat woman: gordophobia, resistance and activism” here .
