Anyone who says the year is over is wrong. There's still time for another great partnership. We say goodbye to 2021 in style: PRE-SALE FIGHT LIKE A DYKE .
This survey is a collaboration with Lesbocenso , a survey led by the Brazilian Lesbian League and Coturno de Vênus that aims to identify the living conditions and realities of the lesbian and lesbian population in Brazil . This is the first such initiative in the country. Neither the IBGE census nor the Continuous National Household Sample Survey ask about people's sexual orientation or gender identity.
The production of data and information is extremely important for the support of academic research and planning of public policies for this part of society, made invisible by structural heteronormativity within the feminist struggle and by machismo within the LGBT movement, not to mention countless other oppressions that affect us individually and collectively, such as racism, fatphobia, ableism, xenophobia, etc.

( • ) WHAT IS LESBOCENSE?
We spoke with Léo Ribas, Communication and Mobilization Coordinator at Lesboncenso, national coordinator of the Brazilian Lesbian League (LBL) and the LésBi Brasil Network (National Network of Lesbian and Bisexual Activists and Researchers) and member of the LGBTI+ National Popular Council.
( • ) What is the Lesbocensus?
LÉO - The National LesboCensus is the first survey of lesbians and lesbians in Brazil. The survey aims to map the sociodemographic profile of this population, gathering information that will support the formulation of specific public policies. The form includes questions about work, education, health, relationships, violence, family relationships and support networks that lesbians and lesbians have in different regions of the country.*In the LesboCensus, there is a consensus in using the expressions "lesbians and lesbians" to refer to this population. This is an ethical-political position.
( • ) Who makes up the Lesbocensus?
LÉO - The National LesboCensus is organized by members of the Brazilian Lesbian League – LBL , a national organization of lesbians and lesbians, and the Feminist Lesbian Association of Brasília - Coturno de Vênus de Brasília , organizations nationally recognized for their extensive experience in activism and data processing in relation to this population. But the LesboCensus team is much larger. All lesbian and lesbian organizations in Brazil are committed and involved in the process. It has supervisors in all regions of the country. In addition, it is a project for all lesbians and lesbians in Brazil. Those who are already forming, those who are here and those who will come. The project also has partnerships with other feminist and LGBT groups, associations, professional entities, unions, universities, research groups, among others.
( • ) When, how and why was the Lesbocensus created?
LÉO - LesboCenso was launched on August 29, 2020, the same date that Lesbian and Lesbian Visibility Day is celebrated.Considering the examples of official sociodemographic mapping that we have today in Brazil, neither the IBGE census nor the National Household Sample Survey consider this population in their questions. In other words, they do not ask about people's sexual orientation or gender identity. Thus, the existing official data is limited and insufficient to estimate the population size and demographic characteristics of the lesbian and lesbian population. Therefore, the LesboCenso was created to work with the systematization of information about the bodies, practices and experiences of these women. The National LesboCenso was created from the partnership between LBL and Coturno de Vênus .
( • ) How important is the Lesbian Census for society, especially for the lesbian population?
LÉO - Based on the LesboCensus mapping, the aim is to change the scenario of underreporting of crimes, violations of rights and the lack of specific public policies for this population, through the political advocacy of lesbians and lesbians in the country, states and municipalities. The circulation and dissemination of information and data collected in the LesboCensus are relevant for organizations and networks, and to support social control and the defense of human rights, such as access to education, health, housing, public safety, among other specific public policies, in a collaborative and more assertive manner.
( • ) How will this data be used and how can it help promote public policies for the lesbian population?
LÉO - With the data gathered by the National LesboCensus, it will be possible to estimate the prevalence of violence suffered by this population and strengthen strategies to consolidate networks to confront attacks, guarantee access to rights, and provide support for this group. Without numbers and data, there are no public policies, so the mapping will serve as a starting point for discussions with the Public Authorities and to support future research on the subject.
( • ) How much data does Lesbocenso have so far and how much more does it aim to have?
LÉO - The goal of the research is to interview 67,063 lesbians and lesbians in Brazil. Since it is an academic study, registered with a university ethics committee, the data will only be released in the final report. The research is organized in three stages, the first being quantitative, with the application of a questionnaire. In the second stage, people who provide their e-mails at the end of the questionnaire will be able to participate in the qualitative stage, in which in-depth interviews will be conducted. The third stage is political education, to influence politically in the regions fighting for specific public policies.
( • ) When will this data be released?
LÉO - As the research is divided into three stages (quantitative, qualitative and political formation), the estimated deadline for completing the form is March 2022 (quantitative phase). After that, there will be a second stage, in which the researchers and organizers of the survey will conduct an online or in-person interview (depending on the phase of the Covid-19 pandemic) with some volunteers who responded to the first stage. The data will be released after the stages are completed, in the final report. The dissemination actions are still being planned.
( • ) Half of the profits from these bribes will be donated to Lesboncenso, how will the funds be used?
LÉO - The resource will be used to strengthen the project's networks, with financial assistance from supervisors, for the dissemination and political mobilization of lesbians and lesbians with a view to expanding the network of research participants and for the incidence in difficult-to-access territories, such as indigenous and quilombola lands, in addition to riverside populations.
( • ) Why did you think of Peita for the campaign?
LÉO - For the feminist ethical-political commitment to social demands.
