Mônica Benício conta como é lutar como uma garota

Mônica Benício tells what it's like to fight like a girl

It is with great pride and resistance that PEITA announces its second minidoc “What is fighting like a girl?”. The architect, Mônica Benício, gave her testimony, not as Marielle Franco's widow, but as a woman, from the favela and a lesbian. This is a teaser of the documentary that the protest brand will release in the future. In Mônica’s words, “being a shoe (in the current Brazilian situation) is a political act”. The interview was held at his home in Rio de Janeiro.

The creator of PEITA, Karina Gallon says that before thinking about talking to Mônica, she made contact with Anielle Franco, sending only t-shirts with the print to the family: FIGHT LIKE MARIELLE FRANCO. Subsequently, the staff of the deputy's office also requested bribes. “Anielle reached out to me to say thank you. I asked about the possibility of doing an interview, she agreed and the opportunity arose to go to Rio de Janeiro the following month. Simple as that, without forcing the bar”, says Karina. It was not in the plans to talk to Mônica at that moment, even though the possibility had been probed.

The PEITA team, made up of the psychologist Larissa Tomass, the cameraman and producer Leticiah Futata and Karina, here also as a producer, were received at Mônica's house on a Saturday after lunch. “She didn't know about PEITA until the week of the meeting, when she looked for us on the internet and liked the project. That's when he decided to talk to us. Also because Anielle was excited”, explains Karina. Anielle and Mônica were recorded together and separately for the PEITA documentary, where they talked about feminism, black women and the favela.

Who conducts the interviews is Lari Tomass, based on her experience in experiences and service in the office. “I went to listen and concentrate on what she was saying. My concern was to welcome, to approach her with affection and respect, without prodding or exploiting. The objective was to get to know Mônica, find out who she is, where her militancy comes from and she is very incredible”, comments Lari. The idea was not to do something journalistic and Karina believes that's why they were so well received. “It was all very personal. We arrived at a super sore moment. Unlike the people who are close to Mônica, who also miss Marielle, we show up at her door like three women who empathize with her pain, giving her a new air, showing that she can count on us, like women, militants and that we are together in the guerrilla war”, emphasizes Karina.

In addition to the interview and the dinner offered with affection, the PEITA team had the opportunity to accompany Mônica to a tattoo studio, where she engraved on her body the phrase: I am because we are, a project by tattoo artist Tais Thorpe. On the way, they gave a ride to a friend who was surprised to see the architect with a BREAST. “She told us that 75 days ago Mônica only wore T-shirts with the same artwork: who killed Marielle Franco. He also said that she was more cheerful, communicative and willing on this day. We didn't know how deeply we were getting into her and that impacted us a lot”, explains Karina.

The cameraman and producer, Leticiah Futata was impressed with the delivery of the interviewee. “I thought: what a moment we are registering here. I realized on time. Women want to talk and we have the opportunity to bring that out into the world in a sincere and intimate way. The cover footage wasn't staged, it's all spontaneous.” account Futata. Lari Tomass adds that “we are opening spaces for speech, giving visibility to women, discussing our role in society, telling stories. We've been silenced for years and we won't be anymore. I wish I could interview all the women in the world.”
