Profit from sales will be donated to a shelter that welcomes women who have suffered domestic violence.
Those who participate in women's collectives, movements or groups feel the power that female encounters provide. More than social articulations, they generate powerful support networks. PEITA values the union between sisters and launches the phrase “Ninguém Solta a Mão de Nobody”, which gained national repercussion after tattoo artist Thereza Nardelli shot her art on Instagram, on the day of the fateful second round of the 2018 elections. t-shirts sold through the PEITA website will be donated to Casa de Referência Tina Martins, a shelter that supports and welcomes women who have fled their homes to save themselves and their children from situations of domestic violence.
The contact between PEITA-Thereza-Casa Tina Martins began on October 29, when the protest brand published the tattoo artist's art in the story and began to receive many messages from people interested in acquiring the phrase. “I was very shaken by the election result and when I saw the illustration, it instantly comforted me. This happened to all the sisters who watched the poll with me. The other day, I only saw it in my feed, and then I felt the power of the phrase”, comments the president of PEITA, Karina Gallon.
The communication team went after the tattoo artist to propose a partnership and Thereza suggested that the profit from the shirt be donated to a social institution focused on helping women: Casa de Resistência Tina Martins, which is located in Belo Horizonte, where she lives. “I have known about the initiative since it was an occupation in an abandoned building in the center of Belo Horizonte. Currently, I do not actively participate in the House but I admire the project a lot. I think the best thing that can happen is that the benefits of the drawing going viral can go to those who are being and will be directly affected by the harm of Bolsonaro's misogynistic presidency, which are poor women and women in situations of vulnerability and violence", emphasizes the tattoo artist.
About 70% of the phrases sold by the protest brand are partnerships, that is, part of the production or profit is donated to encourage causes and social institutions that work with people in vulnerable situations.
No one lets go of anyone's hand
The tattoo artist heard the phrase for the first time from her mother, Lêda Maria, in a difficult moment that both went through together, not knowing that this phrase was used at the time of the Brazilian Military Dictatorship. The GGN newspaper reported that she was a “scream of fear” in the improvised shacks of the USP social sciences course.
The torture agents cut the light and invaded the place to kidnap students who were part of social movements (or who they thought knew something). That's why people held each other's hands, someone grabbed a pillar and when the power came back, they made a call to find out if everyone was there.
Tina Martins Women's Reference House
On March 8, 2016 (PEITA was born exactly one year later), the Olga Benario Women's Movement from Minas Gerais and the Fight Movement in Neighborhoods, Villages and Favelas held the first occupation of women in the city of Belo Horizonte: Occupation Tina Martins . Espertirina Martins was a factory worker who participated in the workers' strike held in 1917 in Porto Alegre, and was instrumental in the confrontation for her bomb bouquet.
The House functions as a space for emergency reception, monitoring and guidance for women in situations of violence (domestic and family violence against women - sexual, moral, physical, psychological, sexual harassment). They offer a complementary service to those already offered by Municipalities that have a policy of confrontation, and despite not being a state body, it is the only institution that welcomes women at the state level.
At the beginning of the occupation, attendance was not quantified. Directly, the resistance house received an average of 350 women (between welcome and shelter) and about 12 thousand people and more than 150 entities and institutions passed through there.
