PEITA and the Football Museum come together to rescue the history of women

Few people know that women's football was banned in Brazil for almost 40 years, between 1941 and 1979. The male-dominated national decree-law interrupted the development of the sport and caused the historic erasure of the women's teams that had existed in the country since 1920. But they dribbled the impediment. As? This is just one of the forgotten narratives that the Football Museum intends to rescue in an audio guide about the 100 years of women's football. The crowdfunding campaign “My life makes history.” , which runs until December 20, is raising funds to get the project off the ground and has rewards from PEITA .

We developed the symbol piece for the action: a purple handkerchief with the phrase “ My voice makes history ”, a reference to the 'pañuelos' used in women's struggles in Latin America. We also took the opportunity to make the backpack project with the phrase “ Play like a girl. ” that would be launched in PUTAÇA - Female Amateur Futsal Championship . The news doesn't stop there, there's a CHEST calendar in the rewards! Yes, each month, a heartfelt sentence to highlight and frame. Run on the Benfeitoria website to see all the rewards.

The audioguide's intention is to repair the historic erasure and inspire women by telling about the resistance and struggle of players, coaches, referees and others involved in the sport over the last 100 years. It can be heard by anyone visiting the Museu do Futebol, in São Paulo, and elsewhere, as it will be available for free on the internet.

( • ) MY VOICE MAKES HISTORY

The research that gave rise to the idea of the audioguide and which rescues the history of women in football was carried out by executive producer Aira Bonfim. We had a chat with her to understand what moved her and about her expectations for the campaign.

( • ) Tell us, who is Aira?

I'm from Campinas (SP) and I graduated to be a Visual Arts educator at Unicamp. I worked as an Arts teacher in public facilities in São Paulo and also as an educator at museums and exhibitions until 2011, when I became a researcher at the Football Museum. Football, until then, was a pleasure for school, for my body, but I didn't recognize it as a field of study, knowledge and so many other possibilities. I was part of the project to set up the Brazilian Football Reference Center, a sector of the museum dedicated to thinking about and safeguarding the memory of Brazilian football (quite a responsibility!). In seven years at the institution, I participated in many research projects, cultural programs and exhibitions that reflected on the monothematic place that football occupied in my common sense. Since then, I have seen sports in general as very powerful tools for transforming reality, for political engagement and for reducing inequalities.

( • ) How and why did you start researching women in soccer?

In 2015, after the men's World Cup that took place in Brazil, the disparity in relation to the same women's championship was huge. No one knew where to watch, who they were or what the Brazilian women's team was about. The history of the modality was another problem, a true puzzle that at the time we knew almost nothing about. The Football Museum, in the aftermath of sponsorships in 2015, brought together a vigorous team of women who wanted to change this scenario and thus the project and exhibition Visibilidade Para o Futebol Feminino was born. Since then, the institution has never stopped repairing the female representation as well as that of other identity groups in its collection, in its actions and, mainly, in the propositions with its audiences. I personally became a devourer of historical sources about the female modality. I spent my spare time doing this and turned this pleasure into academic research in the field of Social History, at the Getúlio Vargas Foundation in Rio. Knowing the history of women's football is nothing more than knowing the stories of Brazilian women, of other women who are different or equal to me. It is a history that reveals exclusions, erasures, at the same time that it reveals transgressions and episodes that make us proud to retell the history of Brazilian football.

( • ) How was the development of your research that will originate the audio guide?

My research was defended at the end of 2019 and in the same year some characters and stories ended up being part of the temporary exhibition 'Contra-Ataque! The Women of Football', also at the Football Museum. However, the history of women in football is still unknown to the general public and the possibility of an audio guide that travels with the visitor throughout the permanent exhibition with this specific focus is very important and significant. History is a disputed place, with flaws in representation, and the museum environment is opportune to debate these differences.

( • ) What are the objectives and importance of this project?

The Minha Voz Faz História campaign is yet another opportunity to amplify what we understand and recognize as football - or would it not be football as we coined it in the academy? If we reach the matchfunding goal in this opportunity, we will gain courage if we continue to tell other sports narratives that are silenced or poorly told (and there are many!). It is also an opportunity for other audiences to engage with the Football Museum: it is important to leave the São Paulo address, leave the soccer world and tell other people about the feminist initiatives of a public institution in such dark political times.

( • ) Why did you choose PEITA as a partner?

The partnership with PEITA is an old personal wish, and now, an institutional reality. More than just me wearing a chest full of meanings and struggles, making the Football Museum and its enthusiasts aware of the protest brand is a privilege.

----

'My voice makes history.” this is a matchfunding campaign between the Football Museum and BNDES+: for every public contribution, the bank adds twice the amount to the cause. But the campaign is all or nothing: the Museum has until December 20th to raise R$80,600.00 (including BNDES participation). Contributions must be made through the Benfeitoria website (benfeitoria.com/museudofutebol) .
