Today, February 19, the International Day of Global Action for Legal, Safe and Free Abortion, our sisters in Argentina are out in force in the streets, the vast majority concentrated in front of the National Congress of the Nation for a new “Pañuelazo Verde” . Conversation circles, artistic manifestations, including a new version of the lyrics and choreography of “un violador en tu camino”, by the feminist collective “Las tesis”, are on the agenda of #19F.

This year's objective is to pressure President Alberto Fernández to submit to Congress as soon as possible the bill for the legalization of abortion, which he has been talking about since he was elected in 2019. Abortion is the leading cause of maternal mortality in Argentina. In Brazil, the procedure performed in an unsafe manner is fourth in the ranking.
2020 is the third year that “Pañuelazo Verde” takes place and expectations are high. The first major pañuelazo was in 2018, when Argentine women took to the streets to demand an attitude from the government in the face of the deaths of their companions. The demonstration had national visibility and ensured that abortion was discussed for the first time within Congress, in 2019. The Voluntary Interruption of Pregnancy Bill passed through the Chamber of Deputies, but bumped into the conservatism of senators. With the partial renewal of the Upper House after the 2019 elections, the expectations and hopes of feminists fighting for the legalization of abortion are high.
